Diversity
The beauty of West Orange lies in the diversity of its residents.
In 2016, Mayor Robert Parisi appointed Tammy as the Chairwoman of the West Orange Human Relations Commission (HRC). The HRC goal is to ensure fairness by developing and implementing programs and initiatives that encourage a positive and constructive dialogue within the township about diversity-related issues. The HRC hosts the Township's Annual Dr. MLK, Jr. Celebration each year, collaborates with community partners to host events, and sponsored the 1st Black Business Bloc Party in the Valley in August 2020. As Councilwoman, this commitment continues. In 2022, Councilwoman and Officer Karen Mango, WOPD LGBTQ lisaon, painted the steps of Town Hall Pride Flag colors for a historic first in West Orange.

The Planning Board reviews all development applications in line with the master plan, while the Citizens Budget Advisory Committee examines the municipal budget to assist in resource allocation during the budgeting process. Additionally, Tammy is a member of the NJ Supreme Court Ethics Review Committee, which resolves disputes between clients and attorneys. Currently, she also serves on the West Orange Chamber of Commerce, the West Orange Arts Council, the HCFO Board of Trustees, and the NAACP Oranges & Maplewood Branch. These boards convene monthly to support community initiatives.

Anna Easter Brown Marker Unveiling
On February 5, 2016, I joined Mayor Robert Parisi, town officials, and more than 300 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® at the West Orange Library to unveil the historic marker honoring Anna Easter Brown—a proud West Orange native and one of the distinguished founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first sorority established for college-educated women of color.
The Anna Easter Brown marker was the first in a planned series of markers raising awareness of and celebrating the extraordinary accomplishments of West Orange icons. It represented not only a milestone for our township but also a moment of pride and recognition for the countless women whose lives have been shaped by her legacy of scholarship, leadership, and service.
In April 2024, following site construction, we came together again to reinstall the marker, reaffirming our commitment to preserving history and highlighting the enduring spirit of Anna Easter Brown. Members, residents, and community leaders attended, underscoring the unity of our township and the power of honoring those who paved the way.
Anna Easter Brown’s legacy is a reminder that West Orange has always been a place where leaders are nurtured and history is made—and that our duty is to keep lifting those stories for future generations.
